The Sound of Silence

Well,

We had the appointment this morning but it was more of a dis-appointment. The thing we were really looking forward to was listening for the baby's heartbeat. They tried twice but couldn't hear anything. This isn't really a bad sign, just a bummer. Aside from that, we filled out some paperwork and Chels had some blood drawn for all the standard tests.

Chelsey was exactly at 11 weeks today and they said it is not unusual to not hear anything. By week 12 they should be able to hear the heartbeat for sure which kind of begs the question why didn't they have us make the appointment for week 12? We do know people who have heard it as early as week 9 so I guess it is a crap shoot.

As is, we know nothing more today than we did yesterday which is a let-down. We were planning on telling everyone once we were at week 12 and we could hear the heart so we know there was really something there and that things were proceeding well. Not we're not sure what to do. We can tell people as planned but it seems a little anticlimactic. If we weren't going to hear the heartbeat we could have told people weeks ago.

There is an ultrasound screening they do between weeks 11 and 13.6 but it isn't required for Chels because she is under 35. It is probably a good idea to have the screening but we want to check to see if it is covered by insurance. It would be really cool to see the baby because it doesn't really seem real yet. If we don't do this screening our next opportunity for an ultrasound is wayyyyyyyy down the road.

I thought the Nurse Practitioner we had was just okay. This was the first trip to a Park Nicollet clinic for either of us. Everyone raves about the people and the place. Meh. I can take it or leave it. They weren't rude but I didn't feel like they were real warm either. Based on this one experience so far I'm not ready to hand out the glowing service medal. Time will tell.
